Four teachers and two principals in Illinois have been named recipients of the fifth annual Illinois Distinguished Educator Awards. The awards, cosponsored by the Illinois Board of Education and the Milken Family Foundation of Santa Monica, Calif., are intended to reward outstanding educators for extraordinary efforts and personal commitment to the state’s public and private schools.

The recipients, who received cash awards of $25,000 each, are listed below.

Ronald W. Anderson, principal, Harrison Street School, Geneva; Kathleen M. Horvath, special-education teacher, Diekman Elementary School, Dolton; Anna B. Jackson, 9th-grade English teacher, Carbondale High School, Carbondale; Donald J. Moran, principal, Ulysses S. Grant School, Chicago; Sheryl Nakonechny, 6th-grade teacher, Clinton Rosette Middle School, DeKalb; Judi Sloan, physical-education teacher, Niles West High School, Skokie.

The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association has selected nine individuals as recipients of its 1992 Distinguished Service Awards. They are listed below.

Glen L. Beere, executive director, Utah High School Activities Association, Midvale, Utah; Jim Dillion, athletic director, Old Mill High School, Millersville, Md.; Ann M. Dustin, director of athletics, Southwest Ohio Athletic/Academic Confederation, Cincinnati, Ohio; Richard G. Fawcett, assistant director, National Federation of State High School Associations, Kansas City, Mo.; Keith L. Lancaster, director of athletics, Oxford Hills School District, South Paris, Me.; Herb Meyer, athletic director and head football coach, El Camino High School, Oceanside, Calif.; Peter A. Three educators were recently named winners of the 1992 Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education, sponsored by McGraw-Hill Inc. The awards are intended to honor those whose efforts have made a difference in the lives of learners and whose programs and ideas can serve as effective models. The recipients are listed below.

Shirley A. Hill, former president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Curators’ Professor of Mathematics and Education, University of Missouri-Kansas City; Thomas W. Payzant, superintendent of the San Diego (Calif.) City Schools; Edward Zigler, co-founder of the Head Start program and Sterling Professor of Psychology at Yale University, New Haven, Conn.

Five Ohio school board members have received the Ohio School Boards Association’s annual All-Ohio School Board Award. The recipients are listed below.

Ken Bagent, attendance officer for the Licking County Juvenile Court and former vice president and president of the Heath City Board of Education; Nancy Lee Gibson, member of the Southwest Local (Hamilton) Board of Education and past president and vice president of the board; Eileen Herold, first vice president of the Greater Cleveland School Boards Association and past president of the Berea City Board of Education; Paul Keppeler, 32-year member of the Williams County Board of Education and former president and vice president of the board; Russell McCall, 29-year member of the Muskingum County Board of Education.

Geri Anderson-Nielsen, mathematics teacher at the Edmund Burke School in Washington, D.C., and Patrick Canan, physics and astronomy teacher at Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Ore,. have been named 1992 Albert Einstein Congressional Fellows by the U.S. Senate.
David Balmer, former athletic director at Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wis., was recently presented with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Award of Merit.
Deanna Banks Beane, a specialist in educational equity based in Washington, D.C., has received a “Groundbreaker Award,’' in recognition of her commitment to providing educational opportunies for minority youths and other underrepresented youth, presented at Educational Equity Concepts’ 10th-anniversary celebration in New York City.
Robert L. Beir, chair of the board of trustees of the Calhoun School in New York City, is the 1993 recipient of the Seymour Preston Award, presented by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
Carolyn Thomas Christy, director of development at the Columbus (Ohio) School for Girls, recently received the Robert Bell Crow Memorial Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
Edward A. Friedman, professor of management and director of Stevens’ Center for Improved Engineering and Science Education in Hoboken, N.J., was recently presented with the 1993 Governor’s Albert Einstein Education Award by Gov. Jim Florio of New Jersey.
Bill Holmstrom of Boone, Iowa, a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association’s board of directors, was named recipient of the Thomas E. Frederick Award of Excellence, by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
Richard Lalley, superintendent of the School Administrative Unit 39 schools in New Hampshire, was recently named New Hampshire’s Superintendent of the Year.
Gov. Zell B. Miller of Georgia, was recently honored with the 1992 Distinguished State Leadership in Higher Education Award, presented by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Gloria Grove Olman, journalism teacher at Utica (Mich.) High School, was named the 1992 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.
Joel E. Scheider, content director for the Children’s Television Workshop’s “Square One TV’’ and an adjunct professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City, was recently awarded the Communications Award by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics, Washington, D.C.
Bob Strauss, a school board member for the Tucson (Ariz.) Unified School District, has received the 1992 All Arizona School Board Award.
