Two years ago this month, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act—the economic-stimulus package—with its one-time federal investment of nearly $100 billion in education. As a result of this legislation, over 350,000 education-related jobs were saved, state governments devised ambitious plans to compete for $4 billion in “Race to the Top” grants, and the federal government put forth solutions to the problems faced by the nation’s weakest schools

But the long-term impact of the stimulus money is much more unclear, according to a nationwide review led by the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media and the Education Writers Association.
