Schools Chief Builds Cultural Bridges Through Language Learning
Michelle Saylor, the superintendent in Pennsylvania's Bellefonte Area School District, has brought robust foreign language learning to her district of 2,700 students. Students from kindergarten on up get a dose of Mandarin or Spanish in a language program that Saylor sees as a powerful lever or getting students to understand what global citizenship really means. “From my perspective, language is that conduit into really understanding another culture," Saylor says.
