"She tries to encourage us to work harder but she keeps it fun and she maintains a high energy in the classroom. She tries to keep everybody up instead of being down and making everything just hard," the 17-year-old says of his teacher. Many of Ms. Dominguez’s colleagues credit her with the improved math scores at the school. She is known for singing "Found a Peanut" to explain a method for factoring a polynomial.

The "diversity" issue of John Hopkins Middle School newspaper, the J.Hop Times, was named best newspaper for grades 7-12 for the 2010-2011 school year. The topic of diversity was chosen by the advanced newsroom class, and all story ideas, reporting, and photography came from the students in grades 6-8.

Looking for a fresh start, the family moved to Iowa City. Tajeria, who recently graduated from Iowa City High School, is the first in her family to attend college.
