General education educators spend a little less time teaching when their classrooms include students with special needs, finds a new study in the journal Education Researcher.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 121,000 teachers in 38 countries that participated in the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2013.
On average, teachers spent less class time on instruction in general education classes with special needs students, but the gap mostly disappeared after controlling for the number of students with emotional and behavior problems.
