Born: Dec. 5, 1927, in Loganville, Pa.
1945: Graduated from William Penn Senior High School.
1952-1957: Worked as a teacher (special education, English, and social studies), guidance counselor, and coach at Kennard-Dale High School in Fawn Grove, Pa.
1953: Received B.S. in political science and history from the University of Maryland.

1957: Earned M.Ed. from Western Maryland College in Westminster, Md.
1957: Married Hilda Wright.
1957- 1967: Served as principal and curriculum coordinator at West York (Pa.) Area High School.

1958-1962: Pursued doctoral studies in educational administration at Pennsylvania State University.
1959: Son, Todd, is born.

1965-1967: Served as president and/or member of the board of the Dallastown (Pa.)Area School District.
1967- 1974: Worked as superintendent of the Spring Grove (Pa.) Area school district.
1974: Elected as a Republican to first term in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Pennsylvania’s 19th Congressional District.
1995: Named chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee after Republicans won a majority in both chambers of Congress for the first time in 40 years.
