David S. Spence

The Southern Regional Education Board has chosen David S. Spence as its next president.

Mr. Spence, the executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for the California State University system, will succeed Mark Musick who plans to retire after 16 years in charge of the organization.

Mark Musick

As a vice president of the SREB during the 1980s, Mr. Spence helped the Atlanta-based education policy group that works with 16 member states set the South’s first regional education goals. He later served as the executive vice chancellor in the higher education systems in Florida and Georgia.

In six years helping to oversee the 23-campus California State University system, Mr. Spence has worked to develop higher-level courses for high school seniors and a college-readiness assessment. He will join the SREB in the coming months.
