Harriet Sanford has been named the president and chief executive officer of the NEA Foundation.

Ms. Sanford, 53, was most recently a principal consultant for Crafting Cultural Understanding, a partnership between the South African government and cities in the United States to build cultural and economic links between the two nations.

The Washington-based NEA Foundation was established by the National Education Association in 1969 to offer grants and awards to public school educators, and school programs, for improving the achievement of minority and academically at-risk students.
