Ninety-six percent of parents of minority children ages 5 to 18 believe their sons and daughters can succeed in mathematics and science subjects. A strong percentage of those parents also believe their sons and daughters can prosper in professional fields in those areas, a survey shows.

The “Bayer Facts of Science Education Survey” is available in English and Spanish from Bayer.

The poll was conducted in March and April by the Bayer Corp., the Pittsburgh-based subsidiary of German pharmaceutical and health-care company Bayer AG.

But while 65 percent of the parents polled believe science- and math-related fields are “very desirable” professions for their male children, only 41 percent of the those professions were as favorable for their daughters.

The telephone poll of 1,250 parents were completed, with a margin of error of 3 percentage points for the first 1,000 responses and 7 percentage points for the remaining 250 respondents.
