“Entering the Mainstream: The Quality and Extent of Online Education in the United States” is available online from The Sloan Consortium.
About 2.6 million U.S. college students are taking courses online this fall, and enrollments in such courses are rising at rates faster than overall college enrollment, according to a survey of academic leaders at more than 1,100 colleges and universities.
The 2004 Sloan Survey of Online Learning was conducted by the Sloan Center for Online Education at Olin College in Needham, Mass.; Babson College in Babson Park, Mass.; and the Sloan Consortium, an organization of colleges, universities, and groups that offer online courses.
