A Second SAT Critic Questions Test’s Scoring

To the Editor:

Hats off to Walt Gardner for his careful rebuttal of the disingenuous defense of the SAT’s “science” by the College Board’s vice president of research (Letters, July 26, 2006). We need to be reminded of this test’s limitations and the disgraceful distortions those with vested interests have used to impose it upon us.

I agree with Mr. Gardner that the clownish name changes this test has undergone reveal at least confusion on the part of the test’s sponsor, but its pretentious, pseudoscientific reporting of scores, followed by the “recalibration” silliness of a decade ago, reveals a cynicism and contempt for the public rivaled only by P.T. Barnum.
