Marion Johnson Payne, the principal of Mount View Middle School in the Howard County, Md., district, has been elected as the new president of the National Middle School Association. Ms. Payne, 54, has assumed office along with Fran C. Salyers, the new president-elect of the Reston, Va.-based organization. Ms. Salyers, 49, serves as the team leader for the middle-level initiative at the Kentucky education department. Both officials will serve one-year terms, and then Ms. Salyers will take over as the group’s president.

Stephen Clem has been appointed the new executive director of the Association of Independent Schools in New England, a Norwell, Mass.-based organization whose membership comprises more than 150 private schools throughout the region. Mr. Clem, 51, previously served for 12 years as the vice president of educational leadership for the National Association of Independent Schools, located in Washington.

Henry Jones has left his post as the chief financial officer of the Los Angeles Unified School District for a position in the private sector with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, an international business advisory and consulting firm with headquarters in New York City. Mr. Jones, 57, worked in the 685,000-student district for 37 years and was responsible for managing the budget for the nation’s 2nd largest district. District officials are conducting a national search for his replacement.

Gerry House, the superintendent of the Memphis, Tenn., city schools since 1992, has received the 1998 Richard R. Green Award honoring the nation’s top urban educator. The award, named for the late New York City and Minneapolis schools chief, is sponsored by the Washington-based Council of the Great City Schools and ServiceMaster, a Downers Grove, Ill.-based commercial cleaning company. Ms. House, 51, received a $10,000 college scholarship that will go to any high school senior she chooses from her district or from her alma mater.
