The technology company Cisco Systems Inc. announced a $40 million commitment last week to an education initiative in the Gulf Coast region to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The San Jose, Calif.-based company said its “21S” initiative, short for 21st Century Schools, would begin in Mississippi but could be replicated nationwide. In the first phase, the company has committed $20 million for the Mississippi Education Initiative, which will provide educational technology, online curricular materials, and professional development to selected schools in the state.
