The U.S. Department of Justice has reached a $1.75 million settlement with the District of Columbia to resolve allegations that its public school system submitted false claims for federal money under the Migrant Education Program.
A Sept. 12 announcement from the department said the school system in Washington falsely certified that it was eligible to receive the money and then submitted claims to the U.S. Department of Education for payment. Under the program, the Education Department provides money to help state agencies provide educational services for migrant children.
The government said the false submissions occurred between 2001 and 2003. Since that time, the city government has taken over direct responsibility for the school system from the board of education.
