The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices awarded $150,000 grants to Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Mississippi to support the development of a strategy to improve struggling schools in those states.
The grants were awarded as part of the NGA Center’s initiative, State Strategies to Improve Chronically Low-Performing Schools. The initative will provide states with technical assistance and resources.
NGA requires states to set up teams of officials that will use the money toward identifying indicators that evaluate low-performing schools; assessing the degree of authority the state has to intervene in the management of those schools; and recommending policies regarding hiring, staff compensation, and budgeting and contracting.
The grants were made possible with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Prudential Foundation.
