National Tests Pared Down For High School Seniors

Seniors won’t have to take the National Assessment of Education Progress in 2017.

The National Assessment Governing Board, which sets NAEP policy, last week cited a tight budget as the reason for cutting back its schedule of upcoming tests.

The writing assessment, along with math and reading, scheduled for 2017 will still be given to 4th and 8th graders only. Likewise, the 2018 tests in U.S. history, geography, and civics will be given to 8th graders, but not to 12th graders. Seniors could take tests in those subjects in 2021 or 2022, but only if there are sufficient funds to administer them, NAGB officials said.
