Ann T. Denlinger is retiring as the superintendent of the 31,000-student Durham public schools in North Carolina at the end of this school year.
Ms. Denlinger, 61, has been the Durham superintendent since 1997. In 2000, she was the first woman to be named Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators.
Last month, the Durham school board unanimously selected Deputy Superintendent Carl E. Harris as her replacement. Mr. Harris, 51, is a former superintendent of the 8,000-student Franklin County, N.C., schools.
