NASSP and MetLife Grants

The Reston, Va.-based National Association of Secondary School Principals and the New York City-based MetLife Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Metropolitan Life Insurance, has awarded 10 schools with $5,000 grants. The grants are part of the MetLife Foundation-NASSP Breakthrough Schools project that awards grants to schools that serve large numbers of low-income students. The recipients include the following:

Alabama: Florence Middle School, Florence.
Maryland: Pocomoke Middle School, Pocomoke; Wheaton High School, Silver Spring.
Massachusetts: Roxbury Preparatory Charter School, Roxbury.
Nevada: James Cashman Middle School, Las Vegas.
New York: Isaac E. Young Middle School, New Rochelle.
North Carolina: Ashe County Middle School, Warrensville.
Ohio: Columbus Alternative High School, Columbus.
Oregon: Forest Grove High School, Forest Grove.
Tennessee: Westwood High School, Memphis.

Rose Community Foundation Grants

The Denver-based Rose Community Foundation, a philanthropic organization that awards grants to nonprofit, educational, and community organizations in and outside Colorado that support the greater Denver community, has awarded almost $400,000 in education-related grants to 15 different nonprofit community organizations. The recipients include the following:

Colorado: Reach Out and Read Colorado, Denver; Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting Network, Denver; University of Colorado at Boulder, Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Boulder; Colorado Association of Black Professional Engineers and Scientists, Denver; Colorado Staff Development Council, Morrison; Denver Center for International Studies Foundation, Denver; Denver Venture School, Denver; Foster Elementary School, Arvada; FrontRange Earth Force, Denver; Gold Crown Foundation, Greenwood Village; KIPP Sunshine Peak Academy, Denver; Project YES, Lafayette; Rocky Mountain Housing Development Corporation, Denver.
New York: Fund for Education Organizing, New York City.
Oregon: Grantmakers for Education, Portland.

Science Internship Grant

The Phoenix, Ariz.-based Helios Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to expand access to post-secondary education, has awarded a $6.5 million grant to the Phoenix, Ariz.-based Translational Genomics Research Institute, a nonprofit group that works to improve diagnosis and prevention of diseases. This grant will extend a summer internship research program over the next 25 years for 45 high school seniors, college undergraduates, and graduate students who are interested in science and medical-related fields.
