STATE TEACHERS OF THE YEAR AWARDS
The Council of Chief State School Officers, based in Washington, has announced the winners of the Teacher of the Year awards from each of the 50 states, five U.S. territories and the Department of Defense school system. The awards are co-sponsored by CCSSO and Scholastic, Inc.
The National Teacher of the Year, named last week, was Michele Forman, Middlebury High School, Middlebury, Vt. She will be released from teaching duties to travel around the country for a year to represent teachers and act as an advocate for the teaching profession.
The national teacher of the year is selected from the state winners. The winners are listed below by state:

ENGLISH EDUCATION AWARDS
The National Council of Teachers of English, based in Urbana, Ill., announced the winners of two awards at their spring conference last month.
Carol A. Pope, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, was awarded the James N. Britton Award for Inquiry Within the English Language Arts, which honors published studies by pre-K through university English educators. Ms. Pope won the award for her article, “Reflection and Refraction: A Reflexive Look at an Evolving Model for Methods Instruction,” in the April 1999 issue of English Education.
Robert Tremmel, Iowa State University, Ames, was awarded the Janet Emig Award, which recognizes an essay or report that appears in English Education, a publication of the Conference on English Education. Mr. Tremmel was presented with the award for his article, “Still Loading Pig Iron After All These Years: Tribalism and English Education in the Global Contact Zone,” which appeared in the April 2000 edition.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AWARDS
Sportime International, an Atlanta-based division of School Specialty Inc., recently announced five national teacher of the year award recipients at the annual conference of The National Association for Sport and Physical Education. The award recognizes excellence in physical education teaching.
Melanie Champion, South Brunswick Middle School, Southport, N.C., was named the National Middle School Educator of the Year. Charlene Darst, Whitman Elementary School, Mesa, Ariz., was named the National Elementary School Physical Educator of the Year. Ellen Goldman, Sacramento City Unified School District, Sacramento, Calif., was named the National Adapted Physical Educator of the Year. Noel Grady-Smith, Mineral Springs Middle School, Winston-Salem, N.C., was named the National Dance Educator of the Year. Pat Hewitt, Hartsville High School, Hartsville, S.C., was named the National High School Physical Educator of the Year.
OTHER HONORS AND AWARDS
Kathleen Gabric, a biology teacher at Hinsdale Central High School, Argonne, Ill., won the Ellis P. Steinburg Award for Excellence in Pre-College Science Teaching from the Argonne National Laboratory. The award recognizes Ms. Gabric’s innovation and commitment to science education. She received a plaque and $500.
Classroom Connect, a Brisbane, Calif.-based company that produces Web- based curriculum and professional development materials, recently presented the Internet Educator of the Year award to Mary Kohl, a kindergarten teacher in Perry Lake, Ohio. Ms. Kohl was honored for her website, www.perry- lake.k12.oh.us/pes/gradelevelwebsites/kindergarten/kindex.htm. She will receive a $10,000 grant and other prizes and recognition.
The National Association for Humane and Environmental Education, an East Haddam, Conn.-based youth education division of the Humane Society, recently named Dave Neubacher, El Verano Elementary School, Sonoma, Calif., the National KIND Teacher. Mr. Neubacher won the award for promoting humane and environmental service through his teaching in the classroom. He received a plaque and a free year’s subscription to KIND News children’s newspaper for every class in a school of his choice.
The Washington-based American Chemistry Society recently named Barbara Pressey Sitzman winner of the 2001 James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching, sponsored by the Albemarle Corporation, for her lifetime achievement in teaching. Ms. Sitzman received a certificate, $5,000, and a trip to the Society’s award presentation meeting. Ms. Sitzman is a teacher at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, Calif.
