Kentucky will begin a statewide pilot program this spring that will allow more than 7,200 10th and 11th graders to take state assessments online.

An outline of the program, provided by state education officials, points out that the goal of the project is to help lay the groundwork for expanding online testing for the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System, or CATS, to all students in the future.

“In the very near future, it is believed that students can take the multiple-choice items online and student responses to these items can be provided to teachers in a close-to-immediate timeframe,” the document said. Prompt feedback for open-ended test questions, however, will prove more challenging, it adds.

Although all schools in the state will be invited to participate, schools will be chosen based on technical capacity and geographic location.
