“Demography as Destiny: How America Can Build a Better Future” is available from the Alliance for Excellent Education.

A study estimates that only 52 percent of Hispanic and 56 percent of African-American students graduate from high school four years after they enter 9th grade, compared with 78 percent of white students.

Hispanic and African-American students, as groups, need to improve their on-time graduation rates and go immediately to college, or the U.S. economy stands to suffer because of a lack of qualified job candidates, according to the study.

Produced by the Washington-based Alliance for Excellent Education, a research and advocacy organization, the report based its findings on several research studies conducted over the past six years.
