I have one response to your Nov. 16, 2005, On Assignment article about Edison Schools Inc. (“Sharing the Load”): No, Chris Whittle!
For-profit schools are abhorrent to democratic society. They, along with charter schools, deepen the gaps between rich and poor. Charter schools take precious funds from the public education system.
A public commitment to education brings immeasurable rewards. The GI Bill of Rights became the great equalizer after World War II, and has done so much for our country. In reality, our public schools need a massive infusion of money.
