Steven B. Johnson has started a one-year term as the president of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education.

Mr. Johnson, 58, is the associate superintendent in the office of special education for the Oregon Department of Education. He has worked there since 1996. He will continue to work for the department while serving as president of NASDSE.

The Alexandria, Va.-based association represents the directors of special education in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and those working for Department of Defense Dependent schools. It offers its members support in the form of training, policy development, and research.

The National Community Education Association recently announced that John H. Windom has taken up his duties as the association’s president.

Mr. Windom, 59, will continue to serve as the executive director of community education for the 46,000-student St. Louis school system during his one-year term. Based in Fairfax, Va., the association works to provide its 1,500 members with training workshops, publications, and products to help them improve community education programs, such as parent education and involvement initiatives, and family resource centers.

Lisa M. Maatz is the new director of public policy and government relations for the American Association of University Women.

Ms. Maatz, 35, was formerly the vice president for government relations for the New York City-based NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund.

The 150,000-member university women’s association is an advocate for equity in education for girls and women. It is based in Washington.
