John Middleton, the superintendent of the Columbus, Ohio, schools, has resigned to accept a job at Ohio State University.
Mr. Middleton, who has headed the state’s second-largest district since February 1991, will become the director of school relations and an associate professor of education at the university.
A New Hampshire high school principal has become one of only four individuals to have been honored for bravery twice by the Carnegie Hero Fund.
Daniel E. Stockwell, the principal of Monadnock Regional High School, last fall offered himself as a hostage to a 16-year-old keeping students at gunpoint in a classroom. Mr. Stockwell talked with the gunman until police could break in and disarm him.
In 1963, the fund cited Mr. Stockwell, then a college student, for saving a man from drowning in the Atlantic Ocean.
The industrialist Andrew Carnegie founded the fund in 1904 to honor those who risk their lives for others.
