More than one of every three students entering the freshman class in Texas public high schools in 2003-04 left school without graduating, and the dropout rates were highest for Hispanic and African-American students, a study concludes.

“Texas Public School Attrition Study, 2003-04" is available online from the Intercultural Development Research Association.

Conducted by the San Antonio-based Intercultural Development Research Association, the study found that the high school attrition rate in Texas schools was as high as 36 percent. Over the past 20 years, the attrition rate for high school students in the state has ranged from a low of 31 percent in 1988-89 and 1989-90 to a high of 42 percent in 1995-96 and 1997-98.
