  • Speedy Confirmation Expected for Paige. Houston schools Superintendent Rod Paige, President-elect Bush’s pick for education secretary, is on track to be confirmed by the Senate on Inauguration Day.
  • Ashcroft’s Record Troubles Youth Advocates. John D. Ashcroft, President-elect Bush’s pick for attorney general, will face stiff opposition from more than just civil- and abortion-rights groups: some educators are also critical of Mr. Ashcroft’s stances on the issues closest to them.
