The New York state board of regents has chosen David Milton Steiner, the dean of Hunter College’s school of education at the City University of New York, to take over the state education department.

Widely published on issues of education reform, teacher preparation, and curriculum development, Mr. Steiner has set a goal of transforming the department “into a hub of innovation and best practices to boost student achievement.”

The Princeton, N.J., native will succeed the states longtime education commissioner, Richard Mills, who announced his resignation in January and left the post July 1. Mr. Steiner will be paid $250,000 when he takes over Oct. 1 as education chief and the president of the University of the State of New York.
