Over the past 25 years, minority students have made significant gains in key areas, including high school graduation and college completion, but major gaps in achievement between minority and white students remain, says a report from the National Center for Education Statistics.

The federal report examines students’ educational achievement from early childhood through high school and college, along with factors such as student behavior that can affect achievement. The study found, for example, that in 2005, the percentage of 16- to 24-year-olds who were considered high school dropouts was highest among Hispanics, followed by African-Americans, whites, and Asian/Pacific Islanders.
