The Pittsburgh school board has signed Superintendent Mark Roosevelt to a new contract through August 2014. It will bring his $225,000 salary to $285,000 by the 2013-14 school year if he meets performance goals in the contract.
The board had been looking for a way to lock Mr. Roosevelt into a longer contract. Pennsylvania law sets a six-year limit on superintendent contracts in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, so the board had to break Mr. Roosevelt’s contract last week and then reappoint him under a new one.
Board members have said they wanted to ensure no other district looking for a superintendent would snap him up.
