“The Power of Pow! Wham!: Children, Digital Media and Our Nation’s Future”
More research is needed to evaluate and overcome the unique challenges that pervasive digital media presents to elementary school students, says a report published by the New York City-based Joan Ganz Cooney Center, a research organization dedicated to studying technology in education.
Children spend more time immersed in digital media than they do in school, says Rima Shore, the author of the report. To address that phenomenon, she outlines three broad suggestions for educators: more research on the benefits and risks of digital media, as well as the educational potential of such technologies; a re-evaluation of the skills that children growing up in a digital world should know, with special emphasis on literacy; and digital equity for all children. About 50 education experts were interviewed for the report.
