Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has signed a bill that requires teachers to pass a skills test in order to get a state license.
The Democratic governor signed the bill last week after vetoing similar legislation last year. A press release from his office says the new bill includes changes sought by his administration.
The new law will require Minnesota teachers to pass skills tests in reading, writing, and mathematics before they receive a license. Current law allows licensed teachers to take and retake the test for up to three years.
The measure passed the state Senate and House with nearly unanimous support from Democrats and Republicans.
